Simon Cowell along with former X Factor judges Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne have come under fire on Twitter for fat-shaming a talent show hopeful in 2004.

In a resurfaced clip from the ITV singing contest’s inaugural series, the trio deliver harsh criticism about wannabe singer Samantha’s weight after she performs Mariah Carey’s Hero.

During her segment on the third episode, the contestant revealed she cancelled her honeymoon in order to audition infront of the industry experts, only for them to tell her to go on a diet if she wanted to progress any further in the competition.

Showing her new husband affection, a hopeful Samantha tells the camera before facing the judges: ‘I got married a week on Saturday.

‘I’m also supposed to be on our honeymoon in Barbados at the minute but we cancelled it so I could come and do this.

Adding: ‘If I don’t get through I’ll be absolutely gutted cos this mean everything to me.’

An enthusiastic Samantha, who is still on a high from her wedding day, stands infront the judges and initially wins over head judge Simon for her dedication to the competition by skipping her honeymoon in Barbados for the opportunity to sing for them.

After delivering her song, band manager Louis cruelly tells a beaming Samantha: ‘I think you should have gone on your honeymoon. I really do. It’s nothing special Simon.’

Beginning to loose her sparkle, Simon adds: ‘You sound nice but you look like a shop girl that’s the problem.’

Determined to get through to the next round, she replies: ‘OK. That’s something that can be worked on.’

To which Simon, who was given the nickname Mr Nasty on the show for his cutting comments, added: ‘Well it’s a lot of work.’

‘I would do anything for this,’ a desperate Samantha said. ‘I know what you’re saying.’

‘What am I saying?’ Simon questions.

Replying the understandably downcast contestant fires back: ‘…that I’m overweight basically.’

Simon harshly adds: ‘You are. You really are.’

Turning to his fellow judges, Simon asks for their final opinion and whether Samantha should be put through to the next round.

‘I’m going to say no because I think it’s mission impossible,’ Louis said plainly. ‘We’ve had some many girls like this.’

His comment left Sharon protesting: ‘Mission Impossible? Louis! Nothing is impossible. I think you have a lovely face and a lovely voice.’

Simon chimed in: ‘Do you know I’m going to say yes because for the simple reason I’d like to see what this girl is willing to do because I think she’s got a nice voice and I like her ambition. [It’s] down to Sharon.’

Continuing to comment on her appearance, Sharon adds: ‘Mrs Go On A Diet and I’ll see you at the next round.’

MailOnline have contacted Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh’s reps for comment.

The clip from 14 years ago left Twitter users, including Daniella Westbrook and 2004 winner Steve Brookstein, up in arms as they commented in their droves about the judges comments.

The user, who uploaded the clip, wrote: ‘I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW HARSH THEY USED TO BE ON THE X FACTOR. This poor woman. Imagine the uproar if they said this now.’

A follower wrote: ‘Disgusting…would not be aloud of TV in this day and age…fuming.’

Former EastEnders star Daniella wrote: ‘Awful girl was stunning I thought.’

Another user commented: ‘It was like three jaded police officers talking dispassionately about a dead body I can’t believe it.’

‘Sharon at the end though “get on a diet missy.” And obv Louis and Simon. Crazy how different attitudes were back even just then,’ a third said.

A user added: ‘This is horrible.’

‘And they wonder why girls worry about their weight,’ another commented. ‘Oh my god that is so bad.’

While a Twitter user shared: ‘Omg just imagine the outrage if that happened now.’

While 2004 X Factor winner Steve Brookstein, who has had a public spat with the judges in the years following his appearance on the show, lamented: ‘Louis Walsh said I looked like a serial killer. Sharon called me a f***ing c**t. Yeah, so pretty harsh.’

Talent shows from yesteryear previously pulled the curtain back on how the pop industry worked then and the pressure they put on their artists’ image.

During 2001’s Popstars, ‘nasty’ Nigel Lythgoe notoriously called Kym Marsh ‘fat’ on camera after she returned back to Hear’Say rehearsals following Christmas.

Nigel, 69, said at the time: ‘Christmas may be gone but I see the goose is still fat’, before telling her to lose weight.

Kym, 42, who has since enjoyed much success as Michelle O’Connor on Coronation Street, discussed how she was left humiliated by the incident.
